Waterjets
How does a waterjet differ from a propeller, and which boats suit it?
A waterjet draws water in through the hull bottom, pressurises it and discharges it at the stern to produce thrust. With no exposed propeller or rudder, it suits shallow-water operation and offers good turning and crash-stop performance; waterjets are common on fast patrol boats, rescue boats and workboats. Suitability depends on vessel type, speed and mission — send us your vessel data and we will evaluate it.
Alamarin-Jet AJ or Omega series — how do I choose?
Mainly by engine power and vessel type: the AJ series covers max. input power of about 100–550 kW by model, for small and mid-size craft; the Omega series covers about 810–1,500 kW, for larger commercial, government and passenger vessels.
Are waterjets suitable for USVs, and how do they integrate with autonomous control systems?
Yes. The Alamarin-Jet Sigma control system accepts propulsion and engine commands from external systems through its EXIF interface; the ACU fitted as standard on the AJ 160 and AJ 180/185 accepts external analogue signals (typically 0–5 V) or NMEA 2000 CAN rudder messages. The integration method depends on the autonomous system's interface — see USV propulsion solutions.
Engines
What does SOLAS certification mean for lifeboat engines?
SOLAS is the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea; engines for lifeboats and rescue boats subject to SOLAS must meet its requirements. The BUKH DV and EPA lifeboat engine series are SOLAS as standard and hold DNV-issued Module B type-examination certificates under the EU Marine Equipment Directive (MED); the applicable documents are confirmed with the manufacturer for each order.
What information do you need to select an engine?
Vessel type and mission, length and displacement, target speed, propulsion (shaft drive or waterjet), annual operating hours and typical load, and whether it is a newbuild or a repower. Operating conditions determine the applicable rating — the more complete the data, the more accurate our recommendation.
Anti-fouling
How does the Sonihull ultrasonic anti-fouling system work, and can it damage the hull?
According to the manufacturer, the Sonihull control unit drives transducers that generate multi-frequency ultrasound, transmitted through the hull or equipment structure to the wetted surfaces, where it creates very low-energy non-inertial cavitation on wetted surfaces, inhibiting biofilm formation so that barnacle and mussel larvae find it harder to settle; the energy is too low to erode metal or coatings. It prevents fouling but cannot remove established hard fouling, so surfaces must be cleaned before installation. According to the manufacturer, the system is designed for low electromagnetic interference and does not affect sonar or navigation systems; for other special equipment, send us your equipment list for evaluation.
Does a Sonihull installation require dry-docking?
Transducers are fitted on the dry side of the protected structure, so dry-docking is usually not required and the hull plating is not penetrated; the installation method is evaluated according to hull material and structure.
Service & parts
How do I request a quotation for genuine parts?
Please send the brand, model, engine or waterjet serial number and vessel name; nameplate or condition photos help. You can use the "Parts enquiry" button at the bottom of the page to email us directly.
How is the warranty determined?
Warranty period, start date and coverage follow each manufacturer's applicable terms; individual warranty claims are assessed by the manufacturer under those terms. For example, Baudouin excludes use beyond the selected rating from warranty. Installing and maintaining equipment according to the manufacturer's manuals, and keeping records, supports warranty claims.
